Dame Mary Bailey, Lady Bailey, DBE (nee Westenra) (1890-1960), Irish aviator, trying the controls in preparation for her flight in the Zogling primary glider near Wendover in Buckinghamshire. Lady Bailey became the first woman to pilot a glider, soon after this photograph was taken. In the foreground can beseen the bungee cord used for delivering the initial urge, with the hold-back crew sat beneath the tailplane, to hold the glider back until sufficient tension is applied to the bungee. The Zogling was built in Germany by the "Kegel-Flugzeugbau Kassel", with the company's distinctive logo on the King-post. Photograph date - 6 April 1930
