EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Beechcraft F-2BH, a significant aircraft in the history of the United States Army Air Corps (USaC). The F-2BH was the first specialized high-altitude photographic reconnaissance type used operationally by the USaC. Fourteen of these aircraft, with manufacturing serial numbers 340 to 353 and US Army serial numbers 40-682 to 40-695, were delivered between December 1939 and July 1940. Powered by two 450hp Pratt & Whitney R-985-19 engines, the F-2BH was equipped with two multiple-lens mapping cameras mounted in tandem in the cabin and a piped oxygen system for the crew. A unique device was installed in the entry door, enabling side-view or oblique-angle photography. The F-2BH's first flight took place in the late 1930s, and it quickly became an essential asset for the USaC. Its high-altitude capabilities and advanced photographic equipment made it an invaluable tool for aerial reconnaissance during this period. The aircraft's sleek design and distinctive features are on full display in this evocative image, transporting us back in time to an era of innovation and exploration in aviation.
