EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a delightful arrangement of three varieties of pears: the Saint German, Comar, and Brown Beurree. The uppermost pear is identified as the Saint German, a pear variety known for its elongated shape and yellow-green skin with red blush. To its left lies the Comar pear, characterized by its round shape and yellow-green skin with red stripes. The Brown Beurree, said to be the most delicious of the three, is depicted on the right. With their elegant stems and intricately detailed leaves, these pears are a testament to the beauty and diversity of the pear tree (Pyrus communis), a member of the Rosaceae family and the Rosales order. As angiosperms, pears are flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed in an ovary. They are dicotyledons, meaning they have two seed leaves, or cotyledons, and belong to the eudicot clade, which includes a large group of flowering plants. The pear tree is also classified as a rosid, a subclass of the eudicot clade, and a member of the Fabaceae family, which includes legumes. George Brookshaw's meticulous illustration, Plate 51 from his comprehensive work, provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these delightful fruits. The Pear, with its rich cultural and culinary significance, continues to captivate and inspire us with its exquisite beauty and delectable taste.
