EDITORS COMMENTS
This schematic drawing by G.H. Davis, published in the Illustrated London News in 1940, illustrates the vast number of planes required to transport and land 1000 men, along with their equipment, in Britain during World War II. The illustration includes various types of aircraft for carrying troops, supplies, and providing air cover. At the heart of the operation are over 50 transport planes, each capable of carrying approximately 20 men, as well as their light howitzers, stores, ammunition, motorcycles, and cycles. To ensure the safe delivery of these troops, the operation includes parachute troops for reconnaissance and securing landing zones, as well as dive bombers and heavy bombers to neutralize enemy defenses. Fighter escorts are also essential to protect the transport planes from enemy attack. The total number of planes needed for this operation comes to nearly 150 machines. This illustration provides a glimpse into the logistical challenges of wartime air transport and the enormous resources required for an aerial invasion. The double-page spread in the Illustrated London News offered a sobering reminder of the scale of military operations during the Second World War.
