Colonies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, dated 1702, depicts Nova Svecia, or New Sweden, a Swedish colonial settlement established along the Delaware River in present-day Pennsylvania between 1638 and 1655. The image offers a glimpse into the early history of European colonization in America during the 18th century. Nova Svecia was founded by Swedish explorer and entrepreneur, Peter Minuit, who purchased the land from the Lenape Native Americans. The settlement thrived as a center for trade, agriculture, and religious freedom, attracting Swedes, Finns, and Germans to its shores. The print reveals a bustling community, with a fortified palisade protecting the town, and various buildings, including a church and houses, arranged around a central square. The Delaware River, a vital waterway for transportation and commerce, is shown in the background, connecting Nova Svecia to other European settlements and native tribes. The print also features a native Lenape canoe, emphasizing the interaction and exchange between European settlers and indigenous peoples. The peaceful coexistence between the Swedes and the Lenape was short-lived, however. In 1655, the Dutch, led by Peter Stuyvesant, took control of the region, marking the end of the Swedish colonial era in America. Despite its brief history, Nova Svecia left a lasting impact on the cultural and historical landscape of the Delaware Valley. This evocative print, preserved in the Mary Evans Prints Online archive, offers a fascinating window into the early days of European colonization in America and the complex relationships between European settlers and indigenous peoples.
