EDITORS COMMENTS
The First Battle of Abukir, fought on July 25, 1799, marked a significant turning point in the Egyptian Campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars. In this pivotal engagement, a much smaller French force, led by the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte, decisively defeated the larger Turkish army under the command of Mustapha Pasha. The Turkish army, numbering around 35,000 men, had been encamped at Abukir on the eastern coast of the Nile Delta, preparing to besiege the French garrison at Alexandria. Unaware of the approach of the French, Mustapha Pasha had dispersed his forces to forage and gather supplies. Seizing this opportunity, Napoleon, with a force of only 14,000 soldiers, launched a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Turks. The initial French assault was met with fierce resistance, but the Turks were soon overwhelmed by the superior tactics and discipline of the French troops. The Turkish ranks crumbled, and their commander, Mustapha Pasha, was forced to flee the battlefield. The remaining Turkish soldiers either retreated in disarray or were captured by the victorious French. The defeat at Abukir effectively ended the Turkish presence in Egypt and paved the way for the French to establish control over the region. The battle also solidified Napoleon's reputation as a military genius and furthered his rise to power. This print captures the chaos and desperation of the defeated Turkish army, with soldiers fleeing in all directions and the sea in the background serving as a reminder of their imminent fate.
