EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting engraving, created by Serra in the late 19th century and held at the Museo Militar in Madrid, transports us back to the Middle Ages and the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The image captures a fleet of ships anchored in a Mediterranean harbor, their sails furled and masts still, as their crews prepare for embarkation. The ships, with their distinctive rounded hulls and high, tapered prows, were the workhorses of maritime transportation during this era. The ships' crews, clad in medieval attire, can be seen scanning the horizon from the lookout points, their eyes scanning for any signs of danger or opportunity. The anchor, a symbol of safety and security, is lowered into the water, securing the vessel to the seabed. The ships' masts, once adorned with sails, now stand tall and proud against the skyline, a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the mariners of the time. The ships in this engraving were likely used for a variety of purposes, including transportation of goods and people across the Mediterranean Sea. The Middle Ages were a time of great exploration and expansion, and these ships played a crucial role in the spread of culture, commerce, and ideas across Europe and beyond. This image, which has been later colorized, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of a time long gone. It serves as a reminder of the rich maritime history of Europe and the vital role that ships played in shaping the world as we know it today.
