Dating back to pre-Christian times, the Yule log was believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits during the darkest days of the year. The log was typically sourced from a living tree, ensuring its continued growth and vitality. In this photograph, taken in Sweden around 1890, the log is being transported through the snowy landscape on a horse-drawn sledge. The horses, bundled up against the cold, pull the sledge with determination, their breath visible in the frosty air. The log, wrapped in blankets to keep it warm, rests securely in the bed of the sledge. The scene is further enhanced by the winter decorations that adorn the sledge and the surrounding trees.
