EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a pivotal moment in the life of Prince Albert, future King George VI, as he takes his seat in the House of Lords on June 23rd, 1920. Having been sponsored into the House by his uncle, the Duke of Connaught, and the Duke of Northumberland, Prince Albert, sixth in line to the throne at the time, donned the traditional robes of a Duke for the ceremonial occasion. The Prince's elevation to the House of Lords marked an important step towards his eventual accession to the throne in 1936. The image conveys a sense of tradition and the continuity of the British monarchy, with Prince Albert assuming his rightful place among the upper echelons of government and parliament. The Prince's regal attire, complete with ermine trim and a coronet, further underscores his royal status. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the formalities and traditions of the British monarchy during a period of transition, as Prince Albert prepared to assume the mantle of King George VI.
