EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the holotype specimen of Oligoryzomys victus, also known as the St. Vincent pygmy rice rat, takes center stage against a simple black background. This small mammal, a member of the family Cricetidae and the subfamily Murinae, is native to the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. The Oligoryzomys victus is a diminutive rodent, with a body length of around 12 cm (4.7 inches) and a weight of approximately 30 grams (1 ounce). Its skeletal structure, particularly the skull, is well-preserved in this specimen. The skull reveals several distinguishing features, including a short snout, small incisors, and large molars adapted for grinding the seeds of the rice-like plant, Oryza sativa, which forms a significant part of its diet. The St. Vincent pygmy rice rat is an essential component of the island's ecosystem, contributing to the seed dispersal of various plants, including angiosperms like Poaceae (grasses) and Commelinid monocots. As a placental mammal, it shares several anatomical similarities with other mammals, belonging to the class Mammalia and the subclass Theria. This photograph captures the intricacy and beauty of the Oligoryzomys victus's anatomy, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of the monogeneric Oligoryzomys genus. The holotype specimen, catalogued as NHM 1897.12.26.1 in the Natural History Museum, London, is a valuable addition to the scientific record and a testament to the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean region.
