This stunning handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, depicts the Doge of Venice from the 14th century. The Doge, or chief magistrate, was the highest political authority in the Republic of Venice during this period. He is shown here wearing the traditional robes and symbols of his office. The Doge's richly decorated robe is adorned with gold and silver threads, intricate embroidery, and velvet trim. He wears a red velvet cap, known as a "cappello rosso," which is embroidered with the Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venice. The Doge also holds a scepter and a ceremonial mace, symbols of his power and authority. The illustration is taken from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860. The meticulous attention to detail in the illustration allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the opulence and grandeur of the Doge's court during the 14th century. This beautiful piece of historical art is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Venice and the importance of its leaders during this period.
