The year was 1857, and the British Raj, the colonial rule of the Indian subcontinent by the British East India Company, was in a state of crisis. The spark for the uprising was ignited when sepoys in the 3rd Bengal Infantry regiment in Meerut refused to use a new rifle cartridge greased with cow and pig fat, which was offensive to both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. The mutiny quickly spread, and the British officers and their families were forced to flee their stations and regiments.
