EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of women from the John Grooms Crippleage and Blind Mission in the heart of London, engaged in the meticulous process of creating artificial wild roses in 1912. The women, with determined expressions on their faces, deftly manipulate petals and stems, their hands moving in a rhythmic dance as they bring the beautiful flowers to life. The scene takes place in honor of Alexandra Day, which celebrated the 49th anniversary of Queen Alexandras arrival in England. Queen Alexandras favorite flower, the wild rose, would be sold at the event to raise funds for charity as part of a "Day of Help for those in Pain" in her honor. The proceeds of these sales would provide much-needed assistance to those less fortunate in the community. The women, dressed in simple yet elegant attire, work together in a spirit of camaraderie and purpose, their collective efforts contributing to a worthy cause. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the resilience and determination of women during the 1910s, as they came together to support one another and make a difference in their community.
