EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's "Book of the World," published in Stuttgart in 1848, showcases an intriguing assembly of four distinct and fascinating creatures: the Wolverine, the Striped Skunk, the Mexico Wolverine, and the Sunda Stink Badger. The Wolverine, represented by the Gulo gulo (Gulo arcticus) and Gulo barbara species, is a powerful and elusive predator native to the Northern Hemisphere. With its distinctive short, bushy tail and sharp claws, this animal is often referred to as the "glutton" or "putorius" due to its omnivorous diet and strong odor. The Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a well-known North American species, easily identified by its distinctive black and white stripes. This animal is notorious for its ability to emit a foul-smelling spray as a defensive mechanism. The Mexico Wolverine (Gulo barbara) is a subspecies of the Wolverine, native to Mexico and Central America. This animal is smaller than its northern counterpart and has a more reddish coat. Lastly, the Sunda Stink Badger (Mydaus javanensis) is a lesser-known creature from Southeast Asia. This nocturnal, semi-aquatic mammal is a member of the weasel family and, like its North American counterpart, is also known for its ability to emit a foul odor as a defense mechanism. This exquisite lithograph not only showcases the unique physical characteristics of these animals but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the past, offering a fascinating look at the natural world as it was understood in the mid-19th century.
