EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating illustration from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg, Germany, in 1804. The engraving depicts three distinct species of marine creatures: a skate (Dipturus batis), a stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca), and a thornback ray (Raja clavata). The skate, with its distinctive flat body and wing-like pectoral fins, is shown in profile, its sharp gill slits and small eyes visible. The stingray, identified by its long, whip-like tail and distinctive barbed tail spine, is shown in a dynamic pose, its body undulating as it moves through the water. The thornback ray, named for its distinctive thorny skin, is shown in a more relaxed position, its pectoral fins spread wide as it rests on the ocean floor. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811) was a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, known as the German Buffon for his extensive work in the field of natural history. His encyclopedia of fish was one of the most comprehensive works of its time, featuring detailed illustrations of over 1,000 species. This particular engraving showcases Wilhelm's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the unique characteristics of each species. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive illustrations. The intricate engraving process involved creating a design on a copper plate, which was then etched with acid to create the lines and details. The plate was then hand-colored using watercolors or other pigments, resulting in a final product that was both visually stunning and scientifically accurate. Today, this engraving remains an important historical document and a testament to Wilhelm's contributions to the field of ichthyology.
