EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant drawing by Robert Sargeant Austin captures the raw emotion and devastating impact of the First World War on the Italian military. Dated circa 1918, the image depicts a young Italian soldier, his face etched with the signs of shell shock, as he travels in a railway compartment. His uniform is disheveled, and his eyes are wide with fear and distress. A bandage covers one side of his head, a testament to the physical wounds he has sustained. Shell shock, also known as combat-related nervous illness, was a common affliction among soldiers during the First World War. The intense and prolonged exposure to the horrors of battle, coupled with the physical and emotional strain, took a heavy toll on the mental health of many soldiers. Symptoms of shell shock included anxiety, depression, insomnia, and in some cases, complete psychological breakdown. The soldier in Austin's drawing appears to be in a state of shock, his body and mind unable to cope with the trauma of war. He sits alone in the railway compartment, lost in thought, as the train rumbles on towards an uncertain future. The drawing is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the long-lasting effects it can have on those who serve in the military. Robert Sargeant Austin was a British artist who served as an official war artist during the First World War. His drawings and sketches provide a unique and insightful perspective on the war, capturing the raw emotions and realities of the soldiers who fought in it. This drawing of the shell-shocked Italian soldier is a poignant and moving testament to the sacrifices made by the men and women who served in the military during the First World War.
