EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving transports us back to the 1820s in Mozambique, a land rich in history and cultural exchange. The first scene depicts the historic meeting between Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and local Muslim natives. Da Gama, dressed in European attire, is shown presenting a breastplate and turban to a native leader, symbolizing diplomacy and mutual respect. The second scene illustrates the infamous incident of Francisco Barreto, a Portuguese governor, being tricked by the natives at Chicoa. Barreto was lured to a supposed silver mine, only to discover that the natives had no intention of sharing their precious metals. Instead, they offered him trinkets in exchange for his valuable goods. The third scene portrays a Portuguese merchant attempting to cheat natives with trinkets in exchange for their gold dust. The natives, dressed in traditional garb, are shown presenting a raw cow or live goat as a more valuable offering. The engravings, taken from Rev. Isaac Taylor's "Scenes in Africa for the Amusement and Instruction of Little Tarry-at-Home Travelers," provide a fascinating glimpse into the complexities of cross-cultural interactions during the early 19th century. From the exotic landscapes of Mozambique, where the Zambezi River's cataracts and waterfalls (alala and Nile, respectively) create breathtaking vistas, to the bustling markets where goods were exchanged, this engraving offers a rich and intriguing window into the past.
