This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Royal Goliath Beetle, Goliathus regius, a true marvel of the insect world. Discovered in the rainforests of Central and South America in the early 19th century, this beetle is the largest species of scarab beetle and the largest insect found in the New World. The Royal Goliath Beetle measures up to 17 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width, making it an impressive sight to behold. The intricate details of the beetle's exoskeleton are beautifully captured in this lithograph, with its iridescent green and blue sheen, and the intricate patterns on its elytra (wing cases). The large, powerful mandibles of the beetle are also clearly visible, which it uses to defend itself against predators. This illustration is taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837. Dru Drury (1754-1838) was a renowned English entomologist, and his work was instrumental in advancing the scientific study of insects. Westwood (1805-1893), a prominent English naturalist and illustrator, collaborated with Drury to produce this comprehensive work on exotic insects. The handcolouring of this lithograph adds to its aesthetic appeal, bringing out the vibrant colours and intricate details of the Royal Goliath Beetle.
