EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored stipple engraving by Pancrace Bessa, titled "Les Insectes" and published by Charles Malos in Paris in 1820, showcases a fascinating array of rove and chafer beetles. The intricately detailed image features seven distinct species: the Lampyris beetle or Rove beetle (top left, Staphylinus erythropterus), the Staphylinus species (top middle, Staphylinus sp.), the Ampedus sanguineus, the Silpha pedemonta, the Temnoscheila virescens, the Cetonia aurata or Rose Chafer, and the Lycus, Bipustulatus, Melanurus, Punctatus, Saperda, Punctata, Trichodes, Octopunctatus, Apiarius beetles (clockwise from top right). Rove beetles, such as Staphylinus erythropterus, are predatory insects with a distinctive elongated body and long antennae. They are often found in soil or decaying vegetation, making them essential decomposers in various ecosystems. Chafer beetles, represented here by the Cetonia aurata, are large, winged beetles with distinctive net-like wing covers. They are herbivores, feeding on the leaves and stems of various plants, and are often pests in agricultural settings. The other beetles depicted in this image belong to various genera, including Ampedus, Silpha, Temnoscheila, Lycus, Bipustulatus, Melanurus, Punctatus, Saperda, Punctata, Trichodes, and Apiarius. Each species is uniquely identified by its distinct morphological features, such as the number and arrangement of punctations on their elytrae (wing covers) and the shape and coloration of their body and legs. This beautiful and intricate engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the early 19th century, providing a glimpse into the rich diversity of the beetle world and the meticulous attention to detail that characterized the field of entomology during this period.
