EDITORS COMMENTS
In this lively and humorous Regency-era scene, a dapper gentleman on a thoroughbred horse brandishes a cudgel, prepared for a potential collision on the road. Behind him, another rider, having lost his wig in the chaos of the galloping steeds, clings desperately to his saddle as his mount crashes into a dray, spilling its load of barrels. The collision has caused quite a scene, with a stagecoach coming to a sudden stop and its driver leaping out, shocked and alarmed. The publican of the nearby pub, holding a golden lantern, rushes out to assess the damage, no doubt wondering how much beer has been spilled as a result of the melee. This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "A Bit of Blood," was created by Thomas Rowlandson after an illustration by Henry Bunbury for Geoffrey Gambado's "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," published in London in 1809. The print showcases the excitement and unpredictability of Regency-era riding and racing culture, as well as the potential hazards and mishaps that came with it. The use of colour adds depth and vibrancy to the scene, making it a striking and memorable representation of the era's equestrian pursuits.
