EDITORS COMMENTS
Ras Prince Monolulu, born Peter Carl Mackay or McKay, was a legendary figure in the world of British horse racing during the 1960s. Known as "Britain's most colourful racehorse tipster," Monolulu captivated audiences with his flamboyant personality and uncanny ability to pick winning horses. Born in Jamaica, Monolulu came to England in the early 1900s and quickly made a name for himself in the horse racing community. He was a regular fixture at racecourses across the country, often dressed in his trademark bright red fez and flowing robes. Monolulu's charisma and larger-than-life presence drew crowds of fans, who hung on his every word as he shared his tips for the day's races. Despite his humble beginnings, Monolulu amassed a loyal following and even counted members of the British royal family among his fans. He was a popular figure in the press, often featured in magazines and newspapers, including this image from the Illustrated London News in 1965. Tragically, Monolulu's life was cut short in 1965 when he passed away at the age of 84. His death was mourned by fans and colleagues alike, who celebrated his contributions to the world of horse racing and his unique place in British cultural history. Today, Ras Prince Monolulu remains a beloved figure in the annals of horse racing lore, remembered for his colourful personality, his uncanny ability to pick winning horses, and his enduring impact on the sport and its fans.
