EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful handcoloured lithograph depicts Ramsons, also known as Buckrams or Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum), from Diederich von Schlechtendal's renowned German Flora (Flora von Deutschland), published in Jena in 1871. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the distinctive features of this wild plant, which is native to Europe and parts of Asia. Ramsons, a member of the Allium family, are characterized by their distinctive white flowers arranged in a umbel, surrounded by a hood-like spathe. The plant's broad, parallel-veined leaves, which resemble garlic cloves, are a key identifier and give the plant its common name. The plant blooms in late spring and is often found growing in woodlands and along the edges of forests. The botanical illustration was created using the lithography technique, a method that allowed for precise detail and tonal range. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of vibrancy and realism to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection. The German Flora, or Flora von Deutschland, was a comprehensive work that documented over 6,000 plant species native to Germany. Diederich von Schlechtendal, a renowned botanist and professor of botany at the University of Jena, oversaw the publication of the work, which was produced between 1838 and 1885. This illustration of Ramsons is a testament to the high-quality and accuracy of the work, which remains an important resource for botanical research and education today.
