EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases the portraits of two of America's most iconic figures: Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. The meticulously crafted engraving showcases the distinguished likenesses of these founding fathers, with Franklin depicted in his later years, wearing a simple black coat and white shirt, and Washington in military attire, complete with the distinctive powdered wig and red sash. The intricacy and detail of the engraving are truly remarkable, with each line and shade expertly rendered by the skilled engraver. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and richness to the image, bringing the portraits to life and capturing the essence of these historical figures. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was a polymath, inventor, statesman, and diplomat, who played a key role in the American Revolution. He was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution, and served as the American ambassador to France. George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He led the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolution and is often referred to as the "Father of His Country." This beautiful and historically significant engraving is a testament to the enduring legacy of these two great American leaders and serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the United States.
