EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Valentinian III, the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, as depicted in Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" published in Utrecht in 1697. Valentinian III, born Flavius Placidius Valentinianus, ruled from 425 to 455 AD. He was the son of Constantius III and Galla Placidia, the sister of Emperor Theodosius II of the Eastern Roman Empire. Valentinian III's reign was marked by instability and conflict, as the Western Roman Empire continued to decline in the face of barbarian invasions and internal strife. In this portrait, Valentinian III is shown wearing the imperial purple robe and diadem, symbols of his imperial power. He gazes intently out at the viewer, his expression suggesting a strong and determined leader. The portrait was created using the copperplate engraving technique, a popular method for producing high-quality prints during the 17th century. The intricate details of Valentinian III's facial features, clothing, and imperial regalia are rendered with remarkable precision and clarity, making this a valuable historical document as well as an artistic masterpiece. The presence of Valentinian III's co-emperor, Marcian, in the background of the portrait adds an additional layer of complexity to the image. Marcian, also known as Marcianus Augustus, was the Eastern Roman Emperor from 450 to 457 AD. His inclusion in the portrait reflects the political realities of the time, as the Eastern and Western Roman Empires continued to function as separate but interconnected entities. Overall, this portrait of Valentinian III offers a glimpse into the political and artistic culture of late antique Rome, providing valuable insights into the lives of the imperial rulers of this fascinating period in history.
