EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Roman Emperor Carus, also known as Marcus Aurelius Carus or Carinus, who ruled the Western Roman Empire from 282 to 283 AD. Carus was the son of Carinus, who was a usurper and held the throne before him. Carus came to power after defeating his father in battle and was later recognized as emperor by the Senate. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" by Francois Salma in Utrecht, Netherlands, offers a detailed and realistic representation of Carus's regal appearance. He is depicted wearing the imperial diadem, a symbol of his power and authority, and a toga, the traditional Roman garment of the upper class. The emperor's serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of strength and determination. Carus's reign was marked by military campaigns against the Sassanid Empire in the East and the Germanic tribes in the North. He was also known for his efforts to maintain the traditional Roman religious practices and to promote the welfare of the Roman people. Carus was succeeded by his son, Numerian, who ruled until 284 AD. This portrait is an important historical document, providing a visual record of the appearance and demeanor of a Roman emperor during a turbulent period in the history of the Roman Empire. The intricately detailed engraving technique used by Bogaerts captures the essence of the subject and offers a glimpse into the classical world of ancient Rome.
