This evocative photograph captures the charming facade of the Maytree Hotel in Hove, Sussex, a beloved local pub and gathering place in the heart of Kemp Town. The red-brick building, adorned with ivy, exudes a sense of history and tradition, inviting passersby to step inside and unwind. Originally built as a coaching inn in the late 18th or early 19th century, the Maytree Hotel has been a cherished part of the community for generations. Over the years, it has served as a hub for locals, travelers, and visitors alike, offering a warm welcome and a place to enjoy a pint of fine Sussex ale. The pub's name, "Maytree," is believed to have originated from the ancient custom of planting a maypole in the town square on May Day, a tradition that was once celebrated with great fanfare. The Maytree Hotel has continued to honor this tradition by adorning its sign with a maypole and the motto "Welcome to the Maytree." Despite its rich history and enduring popularity, the Maytree Hotel was unfortunately demolished in July 2018 to make way for new housing developments. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the pub's storied past and the sense of community it once fostered in Hove, Sussex.
