EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1930s, showcases the Manby Arms pub located in Stratford, London. The image, taken from the corner view, reveals the charming facade of this historic public house, adorned with ornate details and a vibrant, inviting atmosphere. The Manby Arms, a cherished establishment in the community, has a rich history that extends beyond its visual appeal. As detailed on the back of the print (available upon request), the Manby Arms was in operation as early as 1929, with records dating back to 1961. The pub, located at 154-156 Stratford High Street, London E15 4NL, was once a proud part of the Charrington and Company Limited's extensive portfolio. By July 2018, the Manby Arms was sold by Enterprise Inns for a guide price of £1.25 million. However, the future of this beloved pub has been uncertain since April 2017 when a planning application was submitted to demolish the Manby Arms and replace it with residential flats. Sadly, as of this date, the pub has been demolished, and the site is now boarded up. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Manby Arms' storied past and the sense of community it once provided. The 1930s charm and character of this pub continue to captivate us, making it a cherished piece of history for those who have known it and a fascinating glimpse into London's past for those who have not.
