EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Lion Pub in Holloway, London, as it looked in the 1960s. The image, taken from an angle showing the corner of the building, transports us back in time to an era when traditional British pubs were the heart of local communities. The Lion Pub, located at 195 QT, Holloway, London N19, was a long-standing establishment with a rich history. According to the back of the print, the pub had several names over the years, including Sweeneys, O Maras, and Red Lion, and it closed its doors in the late 20th century. However, in December 2014, the building was reopened as a Treats cafe and cake shop, giving it a new lease of life. The Trading Record on the back of the print reveals that the Lion Pub had been in operation since at least 1950, with the 1961 record shown here. The Hoare and Company Limited, which operated the pub, is not mentioned in the record. This photograph is a testament to the changing face of Holloway and the evolution of its public houses over the decades. The Lion Pub is a quintessential example of a British pub from the 1960s, with its red brick exterior, ornate signage, and inviting atmosphere. The photograph invites us to imagine the lively conversations and camaraderie that once took place within its walls. This image is a must-have for anyone with an interest in British history, social history, or pub culture.
