EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Brunswick Arms pub in Blackfriars, London, as it stood in the summer of 2014. The image presents a direct face-on view of the pub, with its red brick facade and ornate, wrought-iron signage. The Brunswick Arms, a cherished local institution, was established in the late 19th century and was once a popular watering hole for locals and travelers alike. By the late 2000s, however, the pub faced an uncertain future. In 2008, it was closed and placed under threat of demolition as part of a major development scheme. Despite the looming possibility of destruction, the Brunswick Arms remained vacant and abandoned for several years. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the pub's rich history and the sense of community it once provided. The image also highlights the transient nature of urban environments, where historic buildings can be replaced by modern developments in the blink of an eye. Sadly, the Brunswick Arms was eventually demolished in 2017, leaving behind only memories and this photograph as testament to its existence. The pub's address was SE1 9NT, Blackfriars, London, and it was not affiliated with Hoare & Company Limited.
