In this striking handcoloured lithograph, we behold the noble visage of Philippe Chabot, Seigneur de Brion, Count of Charny, Admiral de Brion (1494-1543). The French admiral, hailing from the noble Chabot family, stands proudly before an ornate, damask backdrop, his regal attire adorned with intricate gold embroidery and fur trimmings. Born in Rouen, Normandy, Chabot rose through the ranks of the French military and naval forces, earning the esteemed titles of Admiral of France, Admiral General of the French Navy, and Grand Master of the Order of Saint-Louis. His military prowess was demonstrated in various campaigns against the English, most notably in the Battle of the Solent in 1545, where he successfully repelled an English invasion fleet. Chabot's impressive career was not without controversy, however. He was known for his cunning and ambitious nature, which led him to be involved in several power struggles and political intrigues. Despite this, he remained a trusted advisor to King Francis I and played a significant role in French naval history. The lithograph, taken from the renowned "Costumes Historiques de la France" collection by Paul Lacroix, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852, captures the essence of Chabot's regal presence and the opulence of the French nobility during the Renaissance era.
