EDITORS COMMENTS
Pierre II de Bourbon, Sire de Beaujeu, also known as Peter II of Bourbon, served as Regent of France during the minority of King Charles VIII from 1483 to 1491. Born in 1418, Pierre was the eldest son of Jean I, Count of Bourbon, and Agnes of Burgundy. He began his military career at a young age and gained the title of Constable of France in 1451. This handcoloured lithograph is a reproduction of a manuscript miniature from Roger de Gaignières portfolio VII 56 and 91, published in the collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix in 1852. The image depicts Pierre II in his regal attire, wearing a long, flowing robe with fur trim and a velvet cap adorned with a white feather. He is shown holding a scepter in his right hand and a seal in his left, symbolizing his authority as regent. During his tenure as regent, Pierre II faced numerous challenges, including political intrigue and military conflicts. He played a key role in the French intervention in the Italian Wars and negotiated several peace treaties with Italy and other European powers. Despite his military successes, Pierre II's reign was marked by financial difficulties and growing opposition from the nobility. This striking image captures the essence of Pierre II's regal presence and the grandeur of the French court during the late Middle Ages. The intricate details of his clothing and the rich colors of the lithograph transport us back to a time of chivalry, power, and intrigue.
