EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished likeness of Lieutenant Colonel Charles de Salaberry, a French-speaking Canadian who served as an officer in the British Army during the tumultuous period of the American advance on Montreal in the 1812 War. Born in Quebec in 1778, de Salaberry was a dedicated soldier who rose through the ranks, earning the respect and admiration of his comrades and superiors for his bravery and strategic acumen. During the 1812 War, as the American forces threatened to invade Montreal, de Salaberry was tasked with defending the vital St. Lawrence River crossing at the Battle of the Chateauguay on October 26, 1813. Facing a numerically superior enemy, de Salaberry skillfully deployed his troops, using the terrain to his advantage and inflicting heavy losses on the Americans. The battle was a turning point in the war, and de Salaberry's victory earned him the nickname "The Hero of the Chateauguay." In this portrait, taken circa 1825, de Salaberry is depicted in full military regalia, wearing the uniform of a British Army lieutenant colonel. His epaulettes bear the distinctive maple leaf insignia of the Canadian militia, reflecting his Canadian heritage and his service in the Canadian forces. The medals on his chest attest to his military accomplishments and honors, including the Order of the Bath and the Military General Service Medal with clasp for the Peninsula and the South America campaign. The portrait captures the essence of a man who embodied the spirit of Canadian patriotism and military prowess during a pivotal moment in Canadian history.
