EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the King of Sicily, Roi de Sicile, from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The image is taken from illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. The King of Sicily is depicted in full regalia, seated on a horse and wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and ancient chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order, represented by the fleece and the lion, symbolizes the unity and brotherhood of its members, who were all European monarchs and nobles. The King of Sicily wears a crown adorned with pearls, emeralds, and rubies, and a richly embroidered robe. He holds a scepter in his right hand and a orb in his left, both topped with a cross, symbolizing his royal power and authority. The horse, also adorned with gold and precious stones, wears a bridle and a crest featuring the Aragonese royal arms. The intricate details of the King's costume, the horse's trappings, and the rich colors of the chromolithograph make this image a true masterpiece of 15th-century art. The armorial, which documents the coats of arms of European nobility, is a valuable historical resource, providing insights into the heraldic traditions and the political alliances of the time. This beautiful print is a testament to the grandeur and splendor of the European monarchies of the late Middle Ages.
