EDITORS COMMENTS
In this lively and humorous 19th century print, we find ourselves in the midst of a foxhunt scene, where the huntsman, dressed in traditional hunting pinks, loses control of his chestnut horse. The huntsman, identified as Mr. Sponge, is shown being knocked off his mount by a large sponge wielded by an unidentified rider. The force of the impact sends Mr. Sponge flying through the air, scattering his aristocratic opponent, Lord Scarperdale, and his entourage. The print, titled "Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour," is an illustration by John Leech from Robert Smith Surtees' novel of the same name, published in London in 1853 by Bradbury and Evans. The scene takes place in a grand house, likely belonging to the aristocracy, as evidenced by the elegant ladies in satin and watered silk dresses, the footman in livery, and the announcement of a dinner party in progress. The print satirizes the snobbery and etiquette of high society during the Victorian era, with Mr. Sponge, a commoner, disrupting the aristocratic gathering with his unexpected intrusion. The comical and humorous nature of the print is further emphasized by the garland adorning the staircase and the caricatured depiction of the characters. The handcoloured steel engraving captures the spirit of the era, providing a glimpse into the world of 19th century English aristocracy and the amusing foibles of its members.
