EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I, also known as Lothar I or Lotharius, is depicted in regal attire, symbolizing his status as co-emperor alongside his father, Louis I the Pious, or Ludovicus I, in the Holy Roman Empire. The image is taken from Abraham Bogaerts' seminal work, "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Lothair I was born in 795, the eldest son of Louis I the Pious and his wife, Hildegard of Vintzgau. In 817, following the division of the Carolingian Empire among Louis' sons, Lothair received the central portion, which included Italy, as his inheritance. His reign, which lasted from 817 to 855, was marked by his attempts to assert his authority and expand his territories, particularly in Italy. In this engraving, Lothair I is portrayed as a classical Roman emperor, with a laurel wreath adorning his head and an imperial diadem on his brow. He is shown wearing a richly decorated robe, symbolizing his imperial power and wealth. The background features a triumphal arch, further emphasizing his imperial status. The image serves as a testament to the enduring influence of ancient Roman culture on European art and the political aspirations of the Holy Roman Empire. The intricately detailed copperplate engraving, produced during the 17th century, showcases the skill and artistry of the engraver, capturing the essence of Lothair I's reign and his role as a Holy Roman Emperor. This historical portrait offers a glimpse into the rich history of Europe's imperial past and the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire.
