German Gun Bunker Azeville Normandy
This was one of the first parts of the Atlantic Wall to be constructed. There are four casemates 30 metres apart linked by 300 metres of concrete trenches. Following the landings the position held out until 9 June when it was taken by the US 22nd Infantry in an action in which Private Ralph Riley won the Silver Star

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the imposing presence of the German Gun Bunker at Azeville in Normandy, France. Constructed as part of the early stages of the Atlantic Wall fortifications, this strategic position was designed to protect the coastline from Allied invasion. The bunker features four casemates, each thirty metres apart, linked by three hundred metres of concrete trenches. The Atlantic Wall was a formidable defensive line stretching from the Spanish border to the Dutch coast, built by Nazi Germany between 1942 and 1944. The Azeville bunker is one of the earliest examples of this extensive fortification system. Despite the Allied landings on D-Day, 6 June 1944, the Azeville position held out until 9 June. It was during this battle that Private Ralph Riley of the US 22nd Infantry Regiment distinguished himself, earning the Silver Star for his bravery and leadership in the face of enemy fire. The photograph offers a haunting reminder of the intense military conflict that once raged along the Normandy coastline. The bunker's weathered concrete walls and rusted gun emplacements stand as testament to the determination and resilience of the soldiers who fought there. Today, the site is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and a powerful symbol of the enduring legacy of this pivotal moment in history.
