EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the renowned French operatic bass singer, Henri-Etienne Derivis (1780-1856), in the title role of Alemar in Luigi Cherubini's opera "Les Abencerages" or "The Abencerrages" at the Opera de Paris in 1817. Derivis, a celebrated figure in the world of opera, is depicted in the midst of a dramatic performance, his expressive face and intense gaze conveying the depth of emotion required for the role. The opera, which premiered in 1813, is based on the tragic tale of the Abencerages, a Moorish family in Granada, Spain, who are betrayed and massacred by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Cherubini's score, rich in melody and orchestration, is a testament to the composer's mastery of the operatic form. The engraving, taken from Charles Malos Almanach des Spectacles par K. Y. Z, published by Louis Janet in Paris in 1819, captures a moment of theatrical magic, transporting us back in time to the grandeur of the Parisian opera stage in the early 19th century.
