EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisitely detailed handcoloured lithograph, Francois de la Rochefoucauld, a noble chamberlain to Kings Charles VIII and Louis XII of France, is depicted in the grandeur of the royal court. The image is taken from Roger de Gaignieres' portfolio VII 141, published in Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Historical Costumes of France" in 1852. De la Rochefoucauld wears an elegant outfit befitting his noble status. He dons a black pourpoint, a fitted jacket worn under a doublet, with a white linen shirt showing at the collar and cuffs. Over the pourpoint, he wears a long, fur-lined mantle, fastened at the shoulders with ermine clasp. A richly decorated cape, also lined with ermine, is draped over his shoulders, adding an air of opulence to his attire. The chamberlain's pantalon, or breeches, are tucked into high-topped leather shoes, and he wears a simple white linen cap on his head. The intricacy of the ermine fur, the delicate folds of the fabric, and the meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph are a testament to the artistic skill of the time. Francois de la Rochefoucauld served as a trusted advisor and chamberlain to two French monarchs during a period of significant political change in Europe. His presence in the court of King Louis XII, as depicted in this image, underscores the grandeur and opulence of the French royal court during the late Middle Ages. The lithograph serves as a valuable historical record, offering a glimpse into the fashion and culture of the time.
