EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Duke of Guelders, Duc de Gueldre, a prominent figure in 15th century European history. The Duke, whose full name was Arnold, Count of Egmont and Duke of Guelders, is shown here in his regal attire, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and influential chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1430. The Duke of Guelders is depicted on horseback, dressed in a richly decorated surcoat, emblazoned with the arms of Guelders, which consist of a golden fleece on a red background. He wears a helmet adorned with the same arms, and holds a scepter in his right hand, symbolizing his royal authority. The Duke's horse is also adorned with the arms of Guelders, and the background of the print features a landscape with a castle and a river, adding to the grandeur of the scene. This image is taken from Loredan Larchey's "Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle," a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated work on the armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century. The print is part of the illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal in Paris, and dates back to 1890. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph make it a valuable and captivating addition to any collection of European history or heraldry.
