EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 733, featuring the Hemiptera species Idiocerus maculipennis, now commonly known as Idiocerus lituratus. The intricately detailed print, created between 1824 and 1839, was produced during the 19th century by the renowned naturalist and illustrator, John Obadiah Westwood, FLS, under the direction of William John Swainson. The Hemiptera, or true bugs, are an extensive order of insects characterized by their elongated body segments and piercing-sucking mouthparts. Idiocerus lituratus, the subject of this plate, is a member of the family Corixidae, commonly known as side-swimmers or water boatmen. These insects are found in a wide range of freshwater habitats, where they feed on plankton and other small aquatic organisms. The accompanying plant in the image is Setaria viridis, commonly known as green bristle-grass. This grass is native to Africa, Asia, and southern Europe, and is now widely distributed as a weed in many parts of the world. The green bristle-grass is an important food source for various herbivores, including livestock, and is also used as a fodder crop in some regions. This stunning print not only showcases the beauty and diversity of the natural world during the 1800s but also underscores the importance of meticulous documentation and illustration in the field of entomology. The intricate details captured in this image continue to captivate and inspire researchers, naturalists, and enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the past.
