EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of the coronation of King Henry VI of England in 1429, when he was just an eight-year-old boy. Henry's reign began when he was less than one year old, following the death of his father, King Henry V, in 1422. The young monarch's claim to the throne was disputed by the French, who believed that the Dauphin of France, Charles VII, was the rightful heir to the French crown, which Henry V had also held at the time of his death. The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey in London, with the young king wearing the traditional robes and crown of the English monarchy. He is depicted here kneeling before the altar, with the Archbishop of Canterbury and other clergymen officiating over the ceremony. The solemn expression on the faces of the clergy underscores the gravity of the occasion, as they bestow the sacred duties and responsibilities of kingship upon the young boy. Despite the challenges of his early reign, including the ongoing conflict with France, Henry VI proved to be a capable and pious ruler. He was known for his generosity to the Church and his commitment to justice, earning him the nickname "King of Peace." This image serves as a poignant reminder of the young age at which Henry assumed the throne, and the weight of responsibility that rested upon his shoulders from the very beginning of his reign.
