Henry's reign began when he was less than one year old, following the death of his father, King Henry V, in 1422. The young monarch's claim to the throne was disputed by the French, who believed that the Dauphin of France, Charles VII, was the rightful heir to the French crown, which Henry V had also held at the time of his death.
