The Colocynth plant is an ancient medicinal herb, native to North Africa and the Mediterranean region. The fruit, which resembles a small, green, and bitter-tasting apple, has been used for various medicinal purposes since ancient times. In traditional herbal medicine, the fruit was believed to have cooling, diuretic, and purgative properties, making it a popular remedy for conditions such as jaundice, gout, and dropsy. The intricate details of the Colocynth fruit are beautifully captured in this lithograph, revealing its unique and somewhat unappetizing appearance.
