EDITORS COMMENTS
Catherine de Medici, Queen of France and wife of King Henry II, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres. The image captures Catherine in the prime of her life, around the year 1545, wearing the fashionable attire of the time. Her elaborate headdress is adorned with precious jewels, adding to her regal appearance. A lace ruff collar frames her face, while a surtout, made of velvet, is accentuated by high shoulder pads and lace sleeves that open to reveal an intricately embroidered corset and petticoat. Catherine de Medici was known for her patronage of the arts and her influence on French culture, particularly in the areas of fashion and cuisine. Her fashion sense was influential in the European court, and this engraving provides a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French royal court during her reign. Catherine's legacy continues to be celebrated, and this image serves as a testament to her status as a powerful and influential queen.
