EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a copperplate engraving of one of the fifty daughters of Nereus, the ancient Greek god of the sea, mounted on the back of a monstrous sea creature with the head of a horse. The engraving, created by Tommaso Piroli for his Antiquities of Herculaneum (Antichita di Ercolano) published in Rome in 1789, showcases the mythological beauty and power of the Nereid, a water nymph, as she gracefully rides the fearsome beast. The Nereids were the sea-goddesses, daughters of Nereus and Doris, and were known for their ability to control the sea and weather. They were often depicted in Greek and Roman art as beautiful, graceful women with flowing hair and dressed in marine attire. This particular daughter, with her flowing locks and elegant pose, embodies the essence of the Nereid's divine nature. The sea monster, with its horse's head, adds an element of fear and awe to the scene. The use of copperplate engraving, a popular printing technique of the time, allows for intricate detail and depth in the image, making it a stunning representation of classical art and mythology. This engraving is reminiscent of the frescoes and paintings found in ancient sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, which have inspired artists and collectors for centuries. The image serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and mythological stories that have shaped our understanding of the ancient world.
