Persia Shah Nasr

EDITORS COMMENTS
Nasr-Ed-Din Shah of Persia (1831-1896), depicted in this late 19th century photograph, was a significant monarch in Persian history, ruling from September 1848 until his assassination in May 1896. He was the son of Mohammad Shah Qajar and Malek Jahan Khormoeboon, and held the third longest reign in Persian history, surpassed only by Shapur II of the Sassanid Dynasty and Tahmasp I of the Safavid Dynasty. Born in Tehran, Nasr-Ed-Din Shah began his reign at the age of 16, following the assassination of his father. His rule was marked by a period of modernization and reform, as he sought to bring Persia into the modern world. He established a telegraph line between Tehran and the port city of Enzeli, and encouraged the establishment of schools and universities. He also sought to strengthen Persia's diplomatic relations with European powers, leading to numerous treaties and agreements. Despite these efforts, Nasr-Ed-Din Shah faced numerous challenges during his reign. He was known for his autocratic rule and his penchant for extravagance, which led to widespread discontent among the Persian people. He was also faced with numerous rebellions and uprisings, particularly in the southern provinces of Persia. Despite these challenges, Nasr-Ed-Din Shah remains an important figure in Persian history. He is remembered for his efforts to modernize Persia and bring it into the modern world, as well as for his patronage of the arts and culture. This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, captures Nasr-Ed-Din Shah in his later years, with his distinctive beard and turban, and serves as a reminder of his significant impact on Persian history.
