EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the elegant N.Y.K. S.S. "Yasukuni Maru," a magnificent ocean liner of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line, set against a decorative border. Launched in 1930 by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Nagasaki, the Yasukuni Maru was a symbol of Japan's maritime prowess during the 1930s. On a cold winter's day in January 1944, the Yasukuni Maru embarked on a journey from Tateyama, Chiba, as part of a troop convoy bound for Truk. The serene image of the snow-covered branches and blossoms in the decorative border starkly contrasts with the impending danger that awaited the ship. However, fate had other plans. On January 31, approximately 17 miles northwest of Truk, the convoy was mercilessly attacked by the US submarine USS Trigger (SS-237). The Yasukuni Maru took a direct hit from two torpedoes and began to take on water rapidly. Within five minutes, the once proud and majestic vessel had sunk to the depths of the ocean, taking with it the lives of over 1,100 passengers and crew members. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Yasukuni Maru's tragic end, a beautiful ship lost to the ravages of war. The decorative border, adorned with snow-covered branches and blossoms, adds a sense of tranquility and nostalgia to the image, highlighting the fleeting nature of beauty and life.
