EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting lithograph depicts Muhammad I, also known as Muhammad ibn Yusuf, the founding ruler of the Nasrid Dynasty in Granada, Spain. Born around 1232, Muhammad ascended to the throne in 1237 following the death of his father, Yusuf I. During his reign, which lasted until his death in 1273, Muhammad I successfully defended Granada against Christian forces, expanding the Nasrid kingdom's territories and strengthening its cultural and artistic achievements. The Nasrid Dynasty is renowned for its architectural and artistic innovations, particularly the Alhambra Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the intricate Islamic art and design that flourished under Nasrid rule. Muhammad I's reign marked the beginning of this artistic golden age, with the construction of the Alhambra's Alcazaba fortress and the expansion of the Alhambra's palaces and gardens. This beautiful lithograph, created by the Italian artist Dolfino, is part of the Achille Bertarelli collection of prints housed in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe in Milan, Italy. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the print capture the regal presence of Muhammad I, with his flowing robes and turban adorned with intricate gold and jewel designs. The engraving technique used by Dolfino adds depth and texture to the image, making it a captivating representation of this important historical figure and the rich cultural heritage of the Nasrid Dynasty.
