EDITORS COMMENTS
Edouard Adolphe Casimir Joseph Mortier (1768-1835), a prominent French politician and general during the Napoleonic era, is depicted in this striking portrait painted by Lariviña. Mortier, who was born in Saint-Domingue, served in various campaigns under Napoleon Bonaparte, including the Italian and Egyptian expeditions. He rose through the military ranks, earning the title of Marshal of France in 1804. In this portrait, Mortier is shown wearing the uniform of a marshal of the French Empire, complete with the distinctive bicorne hat adorned with a plume. The gold-embroidered coat, decorated with the insignia of his rank, is fastened with a sash and a star. Mortier's sabre, a symbol of his military prowess, is slung over his shoulder. The portrait was likely taken during Mortier's time in Spain, where he led French forces during the Peninsular War. Mortier's political career began in earnest after the fall of Napoleon, and he served as a deputy in the Chamber of Deputies during the July Monarchy. He was a vocal advocate for the rights of the working class and played a key role in the Revolution of 1830, which led to the abdication of King Charles X and the establishment of the Second French Republic. This portrait, which is housed in the National Library of Spain in Madrid, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure in French history. Mortier's military and political accomplishments, as well as his connection to the Napoleonic era, make him a fascinating subject for study and reflection.
