EDITORS COMMENTS
Miss Muriel Perry: A Heroine of the Soldiers and Sailors Free Buffet at Victoria Station during World War I This evocative photograph captures Miss Muriel Perry, a remarkable woman who dedicated herself to feeding the troops during the First World War at Victoria Station. Established in response to a letter in The Times that highlighted the plight of soldiers returning from leave cold and hungry, the Soldiers and Sailors Free Buffet provided meat sandwiches, cake, tea, and fruit to over 200,000 men at a cost of just one penny per head. Miss Perry had been working on the buffet since the outbreak of war, initially in a small way for Belgian refugees. Her tireless efforts eventually led to permission to feed the soldiers directly, as they travelled from one camp to another. The buffet, which cost 1,000 pounds per month, was entirely supported by voluntary subscriptions and had no paid labor. The honorary treasurer was Mrs. Douglas McGarel Hogg. Miss Perry's role as quartermaster was a testament to the incredible work of women and volunteers during the war. Dressed in a simple yet practical uniform, she stands proudly in this photograph, embodying the spirit of selflessness and dedication that defined the era. The Soldiers and Sailors Free Buffet at Victoria Station is a poignant reminder of the vital contributions made by women in society during times of conflict, and the enduring power of community and compassion.
