12th Alcantara Calatrava Castile Cloak Dressing Emblem Iberian Julian Knight Knights Layer Leon Order Orders Peninsula Santiago Templar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century engraving depicts four prominent Military Orders of the Middle Ages, each represented by a knight dressed in their distinctive garb. Starting from the left, we encounter the iconic figure of the Knight Templar, whose white mantle, red cross, and distinctive pointed helmet are instantly recognizable. The Templars were among the most famous and powerful of the Military Orders, founded around 1119 to protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Next to the Knight Templar stands a knight from the Order of Alcantara, established in the 12th century in the Kingdom of León, Castile, and the Crown of Castile on the Iberian Peninsula. The Alcantarans wore a black mantle with a white cross, and their emblem was a castle. The third knight in the engraving is from the Order of Calatrava, founded in 1158 in the Kingdom of Castile. The Calatravans wore a white mantle with a red cross, and their emblem was a castle with a red cross on a white field. Lastly, we see a knight from the Order of Santiago, also known as the Order of Saint James of the Sword, which was founded in 1492. The Santiago knights wore a red mantle with a white cross and a sword, and their emblem was a shell and a sword. These Military Orders played a significant role in the religious and political landscape of Europe during the Middle Ages, providing military protection, maintaining hospitals, and promoting the spread of Christianity. Their influence can still be seen in the heraldry and symbolism of many European countries today.
